After school, we leave with an angry stomach. Sometimes when we go home, we put cup noodles in the microwave for two minutes and eat it with our chopsticks. Although it is warm and delicious with some vegetables in it, our cup noodles are still processed with lots of chemicals. We can’t imagine how much our body isn’t nourished by our food. If not cup noodles, Popeyes or McDonald’s chicken and medium sodas call our names. We don’t want this anymore.
Drinking a can of soda, we think about how good it tastes but then we see how much sugar is in the can. Even though we can read how much sugar is in the can, we have no idea how to read all of the other parts of the label. Some of it just looks like jumbled letters. Schools can fix this by hiring or instructing teachers to teach lessons about health. It is important that students know how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is important to make a healthy lifestyle routine so we can continue these practices for the rest of our lives so we are less susceptible to disease and other problems. We think it is important to have a health class, because the only way students can learn is through their guardians or media. It would be better to learn from school because we should have a concrete idea of what is and is not healthy.
Along with learning about healthy eating, we need to have foods in school that taste good. When we feel full, we can focus better in class. A meal in the middle of the day is really important for us to continue during the day. We should have more diversity of healthy and delicious foods. Schools should have partnerships with New Haven pizza restaurants because they have healthy pizza options and as people from New Haven—the pizza is delicious. Meals should also accommodate people with food allergies because when there is little variety some students only eat cereal for lunch.
Schools can take more action to ensure that students are more educated about healthy food choices—provide it so we don’t resort to processed, fast foods.— Weiyue Zhong and Jason Lin
